NAQC developed ENGAGE-CR – a free 90-minute online course – to equip Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTS) with strategies to engage clients in a discussion about cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac rehabilitation is underutilized and as a result many patients lose out on the potential heart health benefits. Become part of the solution, by registering and taking this online course today!

From Risk to Recovery: Cardiac Rehabilitation and Tobacco Cessation

ENGAGE-CR training is designed for Tobacco Treatment Specialists and others who provide tobacco cessation counseling. It explores how cardiac rehabilitation (CR) supports recovery and long-term heart health after a cardiac event, and how it complements the tobacco cessation work you already do.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for 1 in every 4 deaths. Smoking greatly increases that risk: people who smoke are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop heart disease and are twice as likely to have a stroke. One in 5 smoking-related deaths is caused by heart disease.

For people who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, or another cardiac event, quitting tobacco is essential, but it is only one part of recovery. Cardiac rehabilitation offers structured support to help people rebuild strength, reduce risk factors, and prevent future heart problems. Research shows that participation in cardiac rehabilitation is associated with lower mortality, fewer hospital readmissions, and better quality of life. Together, tobacco cessation and cardiac rehabilitation play a powerful role in long-term heart health and secondary prevention.
